Dear Barley
My Plan G premium went up again. Can I get the same coverage from another company?
Barley’s answer
You may be able to pay less with another company. In most states, standard Plan G policies have the same basic benefits across insurers, though premiums differ. Compare standard Plan G with standard Plan G; a high-deductible or Medicare SELECT version needs a separate comparison. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin standardize Medigap differently.
Getting accepted is the part to check before you cancel your current policy. The fall Medicare enrollment period does not, by itself, give you a federal right to change Medigap insurers without a health review. Your rights depend on your enrollment history, circumstances and state.
Ask the new company whether you must answer health questions, what your actual premium would be, and when coverage would start. Keep your current policy until you’ve decided to keep the replacement. Medicare provides a 30-day period to try the new policy; you pay both premiums during that overlap.
